The August edition of Concrete International Magazine provides an in-depth look at the issues surrounding sidewalk scaling in extreme cold weather and what best practices should be used to mitigate the problem.  SCA member volunteer, Henry Prenger, penned the article and provided a great overview of his decades long work on the subject.  Understanding the full ‘scale’ of the scaling situation is necessary to ensure future sidewalk projects are successful.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Slag Cement Project of the Year Awards.  Projects in the USA completed or scheduled to be completed between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018 are encouraged to apply.  Nomination deadline: November 1st, 2018
Slag cement (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) and fly ash (Coal Combustion Product) are the most commonly used supplementary cementitious materials in construction today.  While they are commonly used and similar in many ways, these materials produce different effects on concrete performance and this document will explore those differences.
The SCA often gives presentations on various topics pertaining to slag cement use and is now offering these presentations to concrete industry groups in the U.S.
Nine outstanding projects from across the United States using slag cement were honored at the American Concrete Institute’s Spring Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Slag Cement Association (SCA) will share their expertise as well as honor the industry’s top, award winning projects during the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) Spring Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) has recently published ACI 233R-17 Guide to the Use of Slag Cement in Concrete and Mortar.  The guide covers information on slag cement chemical properties and product types, storage, handling, batching, proportioning, and the effects on properties of fresh and hardened concrete. The SCA will present "Slag Cement in Mix Designs: Improving Workabilty, Durability, & Performance" at the World of Concrete 2018 conference on Wednesday, January 24th. Attendees will receive a copy of the Slag Cement in Concrete Manual and the ability to ask questions to industry professionals
