Location: Niagara Falls, New York

Award: Infrastructure

Project Team

Owner: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Louisville District/New York District

Contractor: Structural Associates, Inc

Engineer and Architect: Pond

Concrete: United Materials Slag Cement: St Marys Cement

The project consisted of repair and replacement of the existing hydrant fuel system at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station in Niagara Falls, NY, USA. This project was contracted through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District with construction oversight and quality assurance provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District. Work included construction of a new 10,000 barrel (1590 m3) above-ground jet fuel storage tank with a concrete ring wall foundation, an 11 ft (3 m) tall concrete containment dike wall, containment dike pavement, a two-lane concrete pavement fuel offloading area, replacement of some of the airfield pavement, and installation of underground hydrant fuel pits encased in concrete. About 3500 yd3 (2700 m3) of the project’s pavement was placed using a 50% slag cement and 50% portland-limestone cement (PLC) concrete mixture. Concrete for other features comprised a 40% slag cement and 60% PLC mixture.
