Construction of the challenging project included winter conditions in Laramie, WY, USA. The concreting began in March 2022 and was completed in June of 2023. The parking structure slabs were all post-tensioned, and stressing times were based on maturity monitoring because the cold weather would make it difficult to ensure that field-cured concrete cylinders would maintain the same temperature as the slabs.
The concrete mixture design contained 35% slag cement with a 0.036 shrinkage limit.
A high amount of slag cement was used to meet the required average strength of 6000 psi (41 MPa). In addition, slag cement was selected to reduce the water demand and minimize the risk of delamination and cracking.
