The FDOT T7468 – U.S. 41 project, located in Brooksville, FL, USA, consisted of the reconstruction of an existing asphalt roadway with new 10 in. (254 mm) portland cement concrete pavement. Due to heavy truck volume and future growth, concrete was selected as the material of choice for its durability and longevity.
Slag cement was used at a 70% ratio in this mixture due to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) specification change for a maximum strength requirement. The use of slag cement helped to control the maximum strength and workability of the mixture during placement. Thanks to the availability of slag cement, the paving portion of the project was cut down by 4 months.
