Potomac River Bridge/ I-81 Widening and Replacement

This project consisted of the widening of four bridges on 1-81 over the Potomac River in Washington and Berkeley counties in West Virginia. The substructure included 14 9-ft (3 m) diameter columns at 50 ft (15 m). The superstructure included two at 1200 ft (370 m) long by 60 ft (18 m) wide and two at 150 ft (50 m) long by 60 ft wide. A total of 27,892 yd3 (# m3) of concrete was delivered to this project. In addition, 2332 tons of NewCem and 5885 tons of portland cement was used on this project. Slag cement was used in mass concrete in the footings and piers at 35-70% replacement levels. In addition, slag cement was used in all other concrete in the structure, including bridge abutments, decks, and parapets at 25% replacement. Slag cement helped lower the heat of hydration in mass concrete, achieve compliance with the thermal control plan, and improve resistance to alkali silica reaction (ASR) in all concrete.
