The owner of this project desired a low-impact, low-carbon home overlooking the Deschutes River in central Oregon, USA. The home’s polished concrete interior floor, the 74 ft (23 m) radius concrete stem wall, and a multi-level concrete patio are key aspects of the stunning architectural design. The project’s foundations, interior slabs-on-ground, exterior walls, and paving were constructed using concrete mixtures with slag cement comprising 60 to 70% of the total cementitious materials contents. The colored patio was a more conventional 3/8 in. (10 mm) exposed aggregate design, with 15% slag cement in a mixture with a total cementitious materials content of 564 lb/yd3 (335 kg/m3).
