HWY 50 Paving Florida Hernando County
Slag Cement: Argos
Award: Sustainability
This project consisted of 66,575 yd3 (51,039 m3) of new Florida Department of Transportation plane cement concrete pavement construction on SR 50 and Interstate 75. The cross-section was a 12.5 in. (318 mm) concrete pavement section on an asphalt prepared base. There were logistical concerns of maintaining daily traffic operations while construction was ongoing. GLF Construction used Argos Ready Mix to supply a Class I 3000 concrete mixture. The mixture consisted of a 50/50 blend of type I cement and slag cement.
The average compressive strength for this mixture was 2760 psi (19 MPa) in 3 days and 4040 psi (28 MPa) in 5 days. Achieving timely and reliable early strength was important on this project, allowing GLF Construction to drill dowels within a few days so that the adjacent lanes could be promptly placed. Slag cement was also considered an aid for easier placeability and improved workability while dealing with challenging access conditions.
