Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport Aircraft Mooring Apron Replacement
Slag Cement: Argos
Award: Sustainability
The project consisted of the removal and replacement of 2000 yd3 (1500 m3) of aircraft apron. The aircraft apron is used by the Florida Army National Guard for its helicopter fleet operations. The cross section was an 8 in. (200 mm) concrete pavement section on lime rock prepared base. GLF Construction used Argos Ready Mix to supply a 650 psi (5 MPa) flex concrete mixture. The mixture consisted of a 50/50 blend of type I cement and slag cement. The average flexural strength for this mixture was 600 psi (4 MPa) in 7 days and 890 psi (6 MPa) in 28 days.
Achieving quick early strength was important on this project, allowing GLF Construction to drill dowels within a few days so that the adjacent lanes could be placed. Michael Baker International designed the project and approved the concrete mixture design knowing the benefit of slag cement for its superior workability, strength gain, durability, and the overall appearance.
